The title track to Bay Area acoustic slide guitarist Chris Haugen’s most recent album First Light – a work the artist called a “deep meditation steeped in hope and vision” – reflected that time in the early morning when you wait for enough light to paddle into the surf.
His hypnotic, intricately textured new track “Water To Land” meditates further on this profound spiritual metaphor while showcasing his mastery with weaving haunting melodies created from crisp, precise (and sometimes twangy, Americana tinged notes) with moody spacious atmospheres.
Grounded in an infectious repeating motif, the contemplative, prayerlike seduction is a musical reflection of a thoughtful quote from “The Prophet” author Kahlil Gibran: “In one drop of water are found all the secrets of the oceans.” The piece is about Haugen’s continuing search for these secrets and how he can appropriate their wisdom in his life on land.
“Water to Land” is one of six individually released tracks that are part of myndstream Summer Flight collection – the first in a series of seasonal collections of tracks handpicked by the label’s Head of A&R and General Manager (and veteran two time Emmy winning artist) Michael Whalen.
