In a brief promotional video for “Authenticity,” the fourth lead single from their highly anticipated debut collaborative album Quiet Expanse, composer/percussionist Jim Gelcer and multi-instrumentalist David Vito Gregoli showcase a seductive, trance inducing snippet of the track’s exotic and atmospheric, peacefully flowing blend of dynamic percussive textures and hypnotic, Eastern tinged instrumentation.
After highlighting their names and basic instrumentation, the prominent white text reads “Dropping October 1. It’s right before Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), so it’s an auspicious time. And a time for being authentic.” Even though the vibe of the soulful, sonically intricate composition and vibe seems like it would be more connected to Eastern spirituality than Western religion, it’s still a clever and timely way to promote the title and hopeful renewal driven aesthetic of the song.
The wonderful truth is that this song, like the upcoming album’s three previous lead singles also with conceptual one word titles (“Forgiveness,” “Resilience,” “Compassion”) is a powerful, full throttle embrace and expression of Gelcer and Gregoli’s unique artistry and musical/spiritual authenticity. Their individual musical resumes diverge somewhat, with the L.A. based Gregoli specializing in new age and world music and the South African born, Canadian based Gelcer being a veteran drummer in the worlds of jazz and Indian kirtan music.
Yet both are dedicated yoga practitioners who together now create soothing yet adventurous music that would fit perfectly in that quiet, sacred environment. Very much steeped in the majestic traditions of Indian music, “Authenticity” draws us in from its first touch of percussion and immersive droning, which evolves into passages driven by lush spacious ambiences and melodic, sense awakening sitar plucks of various intensities and modulation. As always, Gregoli graces and seasons every measured movement with unique sonic touches.
The result is yet another incredible five minute journey into a realm where peace and inspiration hold sway – and anticipation continues to build towards the late 2024 release of Quiet Expanse!
