While millions of little girls learned about the concept via Idina Menzel as Queen Elsa’s showstopping Oscar winning “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen, for the new age, global music and spiritual minded music fans, there’s a gentler route to take to that awakening thanks to Jim Gelcer and David Vito Gregoli’s gently meditational, emotionally resonant new single “Letting Go.”
Though they include a philosophical line from “some random Facebook dude” followed by a Zen proverb in the promo materials to let us know they don’t take such things overly seriously, the duo’s promotional video for the track starts with a few simple guiding words of wisdom which guide the flow of the song: “The art of life is letting go.”
The exotic, deeply immersive and intricately produced track is the fifth lead single from Quiet Expanse, the upcoming new age/neoclassical/spiritual tandem music project by the Canadian based/South African born Gelcer and U.S. based instrumental artist, producer and sound painter Gregoli. Their complementary talents infuse every hypnotic note, space and ambient soundscape on the project, as Gregoli has long specialized in new age and world music while Gelcer is an acclaimed drummer in the realms of jazz and Indian kirtan music. A relevant fun fact: Both are devoted yoga practitioners who have joined forces to create a graceful yet adventurous masterwork that would lend itself well to that kind of sacred space.
A point of interest for fans keeping score and counting down to the release of the duo’s full-length album: The four previous singles had one word titles reflecting important human virtues that are essential to truly spiritual, well lived lives: “Forgiveness,” “Resilience,” “Compassion” and “Authenticity.” Choosing a title like “Letting Go” breaks that unique series but continues the theme of important principles to live by.
Musically, “Letting Go” continues the duo’s exquisite intertwining of melodic, gently plucked sitar and easily rhythmic hand panning (with occasional bursts of percussive fills), all gently and lushly caressed by the classic Indian drone sound and lush enveloping ambiences. True to its title, it offers four minutes of soul soothing immersion and relaxation, an ideal musical companion to bundling up all the stresses of the day, allowing our minds and bodies to rid ourselves of the toxins and truly let go.
