MORGAN TAYLOR, "Energy"

A few lines into Morgan Taylor’s infectious and intoxicating new single “Energy,” the emerging R&B/pop singer/songwriter breezes into the key lyrical line that hooks us in and invites us into a full immersion into her ever-growing artistry: “Energy keeps building.”

While the surrounding verses make it clear that this track is about a woman’s desire for a man, a feeling that it’s building and hoping he’s sensing big things for their budding relationship. Pulling up and out of the narrative Morgan weaves in the song, however, this line is also a perfect reflection of the phrase she’s long used for the explosive magic she creates every time she hits the stage – “Big Mo Energy.”

Extrapolating further, as Morgan carries us along on her whimsical, groove intensive and dreamily ambient dreamscape, the “Energy keeps building” concept also applies to the exciting reality of the 21-year-old multi-talented artist’s wild career momentum, which includes four singles in the first nine months of 2024 alone.

Written by Morgan, Amore Jones, Gavin Gray and Grammy winner Jeremiah Adkins (The MixGuru), the track offers a nonstop array of rhythmic and sonic delights, from the shuffling groove and pulsating basslines to the playful repeating synth motifs and hypnotic ethereal atmospheres swirling behind Morgan’s soulful, passionate vocals. The production also includes echoing voices around her lead vocals for emotional emphasis, along with other voice textures, including a synth generated male vocal (perhaps a response from the object of her affection?).

While the feelings of love, devotion and optimism are driven by Morgan’s dynamic voice, the production makes us feel like we’re on a swirling, mystical journey of soaring, eternal hope, yet one that’s grounded that’s grounded by the fascinating rhythmic intricacies in the reality that sometimes hopeful relationships don’t work out. Considering all the “Big Mo Energy” that’s been part of her personal story all along, it’s a good bet that “Energy” will be a hit and most listeners will follow Morgan’s cue and set their aspirations high.
